News Bulletin - Spring Break 2009

Spring Break is around the corner and the Floyd County Police Department would like you to be prepared if you plan to leave on vacation.   

Before you leave on your trip, remember these few basic tips:

Make your home look occupied and make it difficult to break in.
Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave home.
Leave lights on when you are gone, connect your lamps to timers to turn on in the evenings and off during the day.
Don't allow daily deliveries of mail, newspaper or flyers to build up.  Have a trusted neighbor or family member collect them regularly.   
Use curtains or blinds on your garage windows so others can't see in your garage.   
Have adequate exterior lighting.   A motion light is recommend for backyards.
If you leave a vehicle at home while on vacation, make sure it is locked and valuables are removed.   Do not leave your garage door opener inside the vehicle.
Have a trusted neighbor watch your place while you are gone.   Your neighbors are your best defense to watch your home while you are gone.
If your neighbor notices any suspicious activity, report it immediately - dial 911 or 812-948-5400 (if you live in the County).
An alarm system is excellent home security.  Update your call list with the alarm company while on vacation.   
If you belong to a Block Watch group, contact your coordinator and let him/her know that you will be on vacation.
