Floyd County Police Department
SCAM / FRAUD ALERT - January 26, 2009

The Floyd County Police Department is still investigating a possible telephone scam.  The group (Charitable Promotions, Inc., operating out of Georgetown, IN) is doing telephone solicitation in Indiana and Kentucky.  This group asks to come to people's homes to pick up cash and checks, which is rare for reputable groups.  This group claims to represent the police and fire departments as part of a bogus fundraiser.  Please make note that none of the local police and fire departments are participating in this fundraiser.

Telemarketers from this company have identified themselves as representatives of the following organizations:  Coalition of Disabled Firefighters, America Assisting Veterans Program, Association of Disabled Peace Officers, Children's Dream Foundation Network, Gift of Sight, Hear the Cry of the Children, Families of Need, Aid for the Elderly, Hospitalized Children's Fund, Help for the Homeless, and American Veteran's Assistance Foundation.

As always, be careful when donating to organizations that you are not familiar with...even if it sounds like a worthwhile cause.
